The Child Abuse Pediatrics subspecialty grew from the recognition that the knowledge and skills required to offer expertise was sufficient to warrant a designation as a fully accredited field. Child Abuse Pediatricians diagnose and treat child abuse and neglect, collaborate with agencies on child abuse prevention, provide expertise in courts of law and participate on multidisciplinary teams. Charter members Linda Cahill, MD, and Jamie Hoffman-Rosenfeld, MD were pioneers in the field, creating programs at hospitals in the Bronx and helping to establish teams when the field was in its infancy.
