New SUNY Purchase College President Meets with Broadview at Purchase College Community
PURCHASE, NY – November 21, 2025 – In his first address to the Broadview Senior Living Community on the campus of Purchase College, the college’s new President Michael Steiper, PhD told residents that the intergenerational opportunities they bring are enriching the lives of students and the entire college community.
During the hour-long exchange between residents of the university-based retirement community, Steiper discussed how he hopes to grow the relationship between the college and Broadview, as well as some overall goals for SUNY Purchase campus.
The conversation also covered the financial contributions from Broadview, primarily for scholarships and faculty support, and the need for improved communication and events to foster stronger ties. The meeting concluded with plans for future collaborations and initiatives.
“Let me start by saying just how delighted I am, beyond delighted, excited, thrilled I am, by this partnership and to have you as this incredible resource, this thriving, vibrant community on the campus,’’ said Dr. Steiper, who became the college’s ninth president in August.
Broadview Executive Director Ashley Wade said that when Broadview asks its new residents why they chose the community, the number one answer is the benefit of living on a college campus.
“We hold the relationship with the college and our physical location on campus near and dear to our hearts,’’ she said. “As we come close to celebrating our second anniversary, this community is coming into its own and really beginning to understand the capacity we have.’’
Since opening in December of 2023, Broadview has offered residents the opportunity to audit classes, attend performances and enjoy programming at the college in addition to developing mentoring and other programs to offer students support. It has been a model for the growing number of university-based retirement communities across the country.
Dr. Steiper cited the “organic growth” of initiatives like a pre-med mentoring program and Broadview Connect.
Dr. Steve Shelov, a pediatrician and former medical school dean who heads the mentoring program for Purchase premed students, said the school’s science program was excellent but needed more support.
Dr. Steiper acknowledged the college’s excellence in the sciences, citing examples of innovative faculty and student research. He said one of his goals would be to elevate awareness of Purchase College’s strengths beyond its renowned performing arts conservatories.
Dennis Glazer, President of the College Council, spoke on the successful presidential search process, the revitalization of the college council and the national impact of the Broadview initiative.
Among some of the other points and suggestions raised by residents were:
- Student Engagement: Residents emphasized the value of stronger connections with Purchase students, particularly freshmen, suggesting that community involvement could aid in student retention and adjustment to college life.
- Faculty Interaction: There was significant interest in increasing faculty presence at Broadview, with plans initiated to organize a monthly “Faculty First” lunch to encourage ongoing dialogue.
- Accessibility and Wayfinding: Residents highlighted the need for better campus navigation. Broadview committed to improving wayfinding strategies, including exploring the creation of physical maps in addition to the digital maps that are already available.
- Academic Opportunities: Residents sought ways to improve the process for auditing Purchase College classes, which Dr. Steiper pledged to review.
